Title: La scuola di Scienze Corporative di Pisa e lo studio dell'economia programmatica negli anni Trenta 
(The School of Corporative Sciences in Pisa and the study of mixed economy in the Thirties) 
Abstract: Towards the end of the 1920s, after consolidating its power, Fascism engaged itself in an original
attempt to create a universal Fascist model, which should replace traditional liberalism. Part and
parcel of this effort of innovation was the challenge represented by the creation of corporative economics,
considered as a ‘new science’ opposed to traditional approaches. Under the guidance of the
Fascist minister Giuseppe Bottai, a host of institutions were created in order to foster the development
of the new corporative science, which in Italian universities had been strongly opposed by the
dominant group of liberal economists. The School of Corporative Sciences in Pisa, and its official journal «Archivio di studi corporativi»,
followed the same destiny of the debate on corporativism: from initial enthusiasm, the discussion
rapidly became sterile, to be definitively interrupted after the end of ww ii and the fall of the Fascist
regime. Contrarily to other institutions of the same type, however, the Pisa School and its journal
offered some original and anti-conformist hints of debate, which were barely understood at that
time, and have been recently rediscovered. Study of foreign economists, the debate on mixed economy
and on the role of the State, the publication in Italy of authors who had been banished by the
regime, and a certain, albeit limited, capacity to understand the rise of Keynesian economics, represent
some of the merits of the group of intellectuals who were gathered around the School.
The present paper aims at reconstructing the history of the School and of the «Archivio», highlighting
the role they played at different stages of the debate on corporative economics and the guidelines,
very often of opposed tendencies, which inspired the economists and jurists who taught at the
School during the thirties.
