Title: I manuali di storia economica dalla metà dell'Ottocento ai primi anni venti del Novecento
(The textbooks of economic history between the 19th and the 20th century)
Abstract: This paper deals with the most important features of economic history as it was taught in Italian «Higher
Schools of Commerce» and Universities between the 19th and the 20th centuries. The analysis of
textbooks highlights some progressive changes both in contents and in the methods of teaching and
research, and the aYrmation of the discipline as the historical study of economic aVairs. Economic
history was initially taught as history of trade; in a few decades it changed its contents and extended
its scope. This path can be observed in the evolution of textbooks, in which it is possible to notice
Gino Luzzatto’s strong influence. This scholar promoted the development and the affirmation of
economic history in Italian universities.
