The analysis of textbooks highlights some progressive changes both in contents and in the methods of teaching and research, and the aYrmation of the discipline as the historical study of economic aVairs. Economic history was initially taught as history of trade; in a few decades it changed its contents and extended its scope. This path can be observed in the evolution of textbooks, in which it is possible to notice Gino Luzzatto’s strong influence. This scholar promoted the development and the affirmation of economic history in Italian universities.
