The historical experience shows that if left to the spontaneous actions of the market the position of comparative economic advantage or disadvantage of a country can persist over time. In particular, «circular and cumulative causation» effects can move a country away from the ‘harmonious development’ of an integrated area, like the EU. This paper brings together the export-led model of Graziani (1969) with the «circular and cumulative causation» effects described in Kaldor (1970) in order to explore the divergence process of dualistic models.
