La visione di Maffeo Pantaleoni («I am a Darwinist». Maffeo Pantaleoni's vision) Abstract: Without denying the various distinct stages of Pantaleoni’s intellectual development, this work shows how considerable was its continuity, identified here in a vision understood in Schumpeter’s sense of «ideological bias». It is argued that Pantaleoni sought scientific legitimacy for his ideology by basing it on a theory very fashionable at that time: Spencer’s Social Darwinism. In each of the various stages of his work are to be found the sequence of the five subjects the vision consists of: hedonism, selection, inequality, coercion, and progress. The study demonstrates that Pantaleoni’s motivation, even in his most abstract of arguments, was always his hostility to socialism. Following in Spencer’s footsteps, what he aimed at was the progressive evolution of society, which he felt was threatened by socialist theories.
